Cry Freedom

Eclectablog asks a useful question

Republicans say they want “freedom”. But “freedom” from WHAT???

Better to think in terms of freedom “for”, that is the program they pursue is the maximum freedom for their agenda. There is a kind of bait-and-switch here, whereby personal freedom for one’s own affairs is transferred to, or implicitly supports the freedom of corporate actors and interests. Thus the language of freedom extends ends up creating the public space that in turns restricts that very freedom. Its end result is the freedom to kvetch but not finally the freedom to self-determine one’s community, one’s neighborhood.
